Feeling Low? Try the stop method.


As a young woman going through the transition of being a full grown and independent adult, I know that life can get very stressful at times. There are many moments when I feel really low and down in the dumps. When I get in these types of funks I try the STOP method. It is something I found on Pinterest and I love it.

So the STOP method involves 4 steps: Stop, Take a breathe, Observe and Purpose.

STOP!

Literally stop. Stop whatever you are doing (walking, talking etc.) Take a moment to get yourself together without worrying about what is going on in that moment. Just freeze in time, stop engaging in what is causing this low feeling.

TAKE A BREATH

After you have stopped what you are doing, take a big deep breath. In fact take a couple deep breaths. Sometimes when people are feeling low they need to just breathe. Focusing on your breathing can take the focus away from what is causing you to stress and help relax you. It can even relieve stress that has built up in your body. So just BREATHE.

OBSERVE

Observe what is going on around you and how you feel. What could be causing these feelings? Is there anything that you can change that would make you feel better and help improve your mood? What is going on with your body? Are you tense? adjust your body to relieve pressure and tension on you joint and muscles.

PROCEED WITH PURPOSE

What are you doing right now? WHY ARE YOU DOING it. A lot of people do things just to have something to do or to stop themselves from being bored. After you have done the steps above, proceed with what you are going with purpose. Having a meaning for your actions can improve confidence and help give you a since of purpose. And if what you are doing right now serves no purpose, then stop doing it. Do something that helps you get to your current goals. Your time is precious, don't waste it doing meaningless actions.
