5 MUST HAVES BEFORE STARTING ANY CROCHET PROJECT

Writer's picture: Kayla LeeKayla Lee

When I was first learning to crochet I didn't have anyone to give me advice on the best way to do things. So here I am being that person for you all who are interested in learning to crochet. Here are 5 things that i believe you must have before you start any crochet projects.

1. THE PATTERN!

If you are new to crochet, I highly suggest you find a pattern before you start any projects. I guarantee that you can find either a free written or video pattern for anything. YouTube and Pinterest are amazing resources when looking for patterns. I do not recommend trying to make something based off a picture if you aren't and experienced crocheter. Designing patterns take a lot of skill and practice and I myself cant crochet without a pattern most times. My favorite YouTubers to go for patterns are Yarnutopia and Bellacoco. (Links provided) They have easy to follow video tutorials and they break down all patterns step by step.

2. The correct yarn

There is nothing worst than finishing a project and the size isn't correct according to the pattern. Most patterns will list a type of yarn and a weight, i.e worsted weight, thread etc. If a pattern calls for worsted weight yarn and you are using super bulky yarn the size wont be consistent in your pattern. Always read through a whole pattern before you begin. Most patterns will also tell you the name of the yarn brand and color so you can have the exact results pictured.

3. The proper hook

When looking at the label on a skein of yarn, there will be a chart that tells you what size crochet hook you should be using (knitting needle size is also listed). This is a recommendation telling you which hook size is bet suited for that weight of yarn. Now if you would like your stitched to be tighter than you can use a smaller hook size and if you wasn't your project to come out a little looser and more flexible then using a bigger hook is alright but I suggest not going any more than one size away from what is listed on the label. Hook size determines how big you stitches will be.

4. Yarn needles

No, these are not like knitting needles. Yarn needles are often plastic little blue needles. There are metal ones but I like using the plastic ones because they are more flexible. Yarn needles are typically used to weave in the end pieces of yarn when you are switching colors or finished with a project. There are different ways to prevent having ends to weave in, but as a beginner I suggest investing in yarn needles until you are able to master different techniques for getting rid of your ends.

5. Stitch markers

These are very important for anyone new to crochet and even experienced crocheters like myself. Stitch markers are often small colored clips, although there are now some different kinds out now if you shop around. These are great for when you are stepping away from your project and want to save your progress and not risk it unraveling on you. I always buy these in bulk because they are easy to lose track of but they are a life saver when you are working on a project and have to step away quickly.
